About

Two cities. One revolution. 250 years on.

Echoes of Revolution is a world-leading cultural experience that brings Boston and New York’s revolutionary past to life.

The project

Echoes of Revolution launches in two cities, Boston and New York City, to coincide with the 250th anniversary of American independence. In each city, players walk the streets where revolutionary history happened, and see the past brought to life around them. The experience uses the world of the video game Assassin’s Creed® III, and is powered by Niantic Spatial’s visual positioning platform, which recognises a user’s precise location to within ten centimetres, and anchors richly detailed 18th-century recreations to the city as it stands today. Every memory is grounded in the historical record, developed with Revolutionary Spaces in Boston, and the Gotham Center for New York City History in NYC.

Learning through play

Echoes of Revolution is built on the conviction that play is one of the most powerful ways people engage with the past. Throwing yourself into a moment, making decisions, and feeling the stakes of a story is how history becomes real. Every memory is designed so that engagement and understanding arrive together.

Told for this generation

Echoes of Revolution is designed to be relevant and engaging for a 14-year-old on a school visit, a lifelong Bostonian or New Yorker, a historian, or a first-time tourist. Launching as America marks 250 years since independence, it is a centrepiece cultural technology experience of the anniversary, and one that keeps the focus on the two cities at the heart of the Revolution.

Powered by the world of Assassin’s Creed

Echoes of Revolution has been created in partnership with Ubisoft, the creator of Assassin’s Creed. The apps feature imagery from Assassin’s Creed® III and Assassin’s Creed® Rogue to create detailed 3D recreations of the cities and moments from the period. No prior knowledge of the franchise or of video games is needed to play.

Made in Wales

Echoes of Revolution is developed by Sugar Creative, an award-winning creative technology studio based in Cardiff, Wales. It was made possible with production grant funding from Media Cymru, and through R&D investment from T-Mobile.
